Description

Silent as the Grave: Hand Painted Altar / Art Card with Natural Slate Stand

This two-sided hand painted card was created using watercolor, ink, and paper collage elements that were salvaged from old books. The edge of the card has been painted with copper metallic watercolor. The card itself has been sealed with a protective wax finish to give it a nice satiny feel, and measures 3″ W x 5″ H x 1/16″ D. I hand crafted the stand for the card from salvaged roof slate, which has a subtly variegated green/grey color. The slate has a cork bottom to protect your furniture from scratches.

I selected collage elements to give this art card an ecclesiastical feel to reflect on the thoughts I have had lately about all the secrets that have been kept in the name of the Christian god over the years. In particular I have been thinking of the mass graves of indigenous children being revealed at residential schools throughout North America, but this crime of silence extends wherever power and money combine with religious ambition.

This is a one-of-a-kind original signed painted collage that will not be reproduced or repeated.
