The Raven Shield is completely hand carved from mahogany wood based on my own original design. This small shield was carved using a range of carving gouges, like those shown in the first photograph, and then sealed with an oil and wax finish. There is a brass hanging hook on the back of the carving, with a small recess that allows for the carving to hang flush to the wall. This carving is 9 1/4″ high by 5″ wide and is 1/2″ thick.

This small shield was carved using a range of carving gouges, like those shown in the first photograph, and then sealed with an oil and wax finish. There is a brass hanging hook on the back of the carving, with a small recess that allows for the carving to hang flush to the wall. This carving is 9 1/4″ high by 5″ wide and is 1/2″ thick.
The image of a feathered shield is a compelling one to me – the softness of feathers carefully layered together to form a symbol of protection. In this design I used 10 feathers in the 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 arrangement of the tetractys – the all-encompassing Pythagorean symbol containing the wholeness of creation. Above the feathers is a Fionn’s wheel of Ogham characters, a shield within the shield, that spell out an ancient Irish word that translates as “shadow.” I created this not so much as a shield to guard against the shadow as a companion on the journey of exploring some of the darker areas of our souls.
I created this as an alternative heraldry, an imagined ancestry, an emblem of your magical heritage. It is a shield for the kith and kin of raven kind.
