Carving

I have found that much of the artwork I create in 2D translates very naturally to 3D relief carving. It wasn’t until I began carving that I realized how much of the design process for my 2D work is conceptualized in relief. I feel as if the years spent designing, drawing, and painting in 2D was actually done in preparation for working in wood, even though that was never part of the thought process at the time. All of the work here has originated in some way with ideas and imagery first explored in drawings and paintings. Transforming these designs into wood is a very satisfying extension of my creative process.

Many of these items are available for sale through my Etsy store which can be viewed by clicking HERE.

I am very interested in the designs of the Celtic Cross, most respectively, that which relate to Scot and Irish Christian religion. I am First Presbyterian, and we have a very old, and beautiful cross hanging in our church. As I am familiar with the references to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, I am most interested in writing a paper, for our congregation, on the history and meaning of the Christian references depicted on the Celtic Cross. I would be most appreciative if you could be of assistance in either providing me reference material/drawing/symbol meanings, or provide me reference links. Thank You!

I would first recommend the books on Irish art history by Francoise Henry – Irish Art in the Early Christian Period and Early Christian Irish Art. There is another good book called Irish High Crosses by Richardson and Scarry. There are many other good books on the subject and information online but these should give you a good start.
